As pet lovers and pet owners ourselves, we truly understand the hearts of pet parents. Our pets show us unconditional love. And although we don’t speak the same language, there is an unbreakable trust between a pet and his or her family. The death of a dog, cat or any pet can be a very profound experience – and more often than not, we are left not knowing the best way to honour them. Allowing your pet to carry on growing alongside you as a tree is one idea that many people find great comfort in. In this way, death becomes a transformation and return to life through nature.

The Pet Bios Urn has a special patented design and comes in two unique pieces and compartments. One compartment holds the ash specifically, while the other holds the soil mix, and any type of seeds or baby sapling. The patented double-component design was created with the specific intent of housing the seeds or a seedling safely, to ensure their healthy growth. In between the double capsule lies an expansion disc, composed of recycled coconuts, cocopeat, vermiculite, wood chips, and nutrients which aid mother nature in the growth of the tree.

In 2002, the Bios Urn was a winner at the ADI FAD Design Awards, and in 2005 nominated as a finalist for the INDEX Award with a “Design to improve life.” During this time, one of the very first Bios Urns produced was used by the Barcelona Zoo to plant the remains of the iconic albino gorilla, know as Little Snowflake where he is now part of a beautiful African tree.

The Designer

The idea for the Bios Urn came to co-founder Gerard Moline when he was a young child. He was in the garden planting flowers and vegetables with his grandmother, when she discovered a dead bird. She instinctively took the bird, buried it in a hole and planted some wildflower seeds on top… thus giving it new life. Gerard carried this memory with him for many years, and in 1997 he created the first prototypes for the Bios Urn which later went to market in 2001. From there, Gerard spent years developing the urn until launching it in 2012 with its' current design.
