The Capsula Mundi Urn, containing your loved ones ashes will be buried as a seed in the earth. The urn is made from a bio-polymer that is fully biodegradable and compostable over time. A tree, chosen in life by the deceased or later by love ones, will be planted on top of the Capsula Mundi Urn. Over time the ashes will become part of the soil which nurtures the tree. The tree will serve as a memorial for your love one and as a legacy for the future of our planet. Family and friends can continue to care for the tree through the years as it grows.

When planting your tree, a hole no less than three foot in depth should be prepared. The Capsula Mundi should be gently placed in the hole along with your tree above and covered with soil or mulch. Trees can be purchased from your local nursery or UK national provider.

The Designers

Capsula Mundi is the name of a cultural project and company founded by two Italian designers, Anna and Raoul who envision a different approach to the way we think about death. Raoul states “During the conception of our design, firstly we chose to use the universal symbols of rebirth (the egg, the tree and the foetal position) because we believe that death is not the end but the beginning of a new life, returning to the full cycle of nature. Secondly, with the environment in mind we chose to plant and grow trees rather than see them cut down to make coffins. Our wish is to help see the growth of a global green canopy so that our children and future generations may benefit by way of our small contribution.
